Century Club

By Eric Todd

With the most recent update to the record list by our new records director, John Strangeway, I thought it would be a good opportunity to update our century club.  There was no movement whatsoever in the women’s list.  Though the number of records changed somewhat in the men’s list, the top 12 stayed in the exact same order as they were in the last update in January of 2020.  I was able to jump from number 15 to number 13 by adding 20 records.  The biggest leap was John Strangeway going from 22nd to 16th by adding 36 records to the list.  Aiden Habecker jumped a few spots from 28th to a three way tie at 24.  Aiden added 13 to his total.  Jeff Ciavattone made the jump from 27th to the three way tie at 24th by adding 12 records to his total. (Aiden and Jeff share 24th place on our list with Bob Geib).  One thing of note is that big Frank made it to three centuries for this update.  The biggest news is that we have a new member of the century club with this update.  Abe Smith, of Clark’s Gym in Missouri, has achieved century club status after a couple of decades of record setting.  Abe comes in with 108 record. If you think you should be listed as a member of the Century Club, or if you think you are getting close and would like for me to keep an eye on when you might be joining us, please reach out to me.  My email address is SalGuimino@yahoo.com.

NEW CENTURY CLUB MEMBER

By Al Myers

An updated record list is now available on the website.  It’s been a few months with several comps so there has been alot of additions. I want to thank Scottish Johnny for his help in getting this list updated.  He’s been my assistant lately with the record list and his help has been much appreciated.

The BIG NEWS this time is the addition of a new CENTURY CLUB member.   Longtime USAWA member Jeff Ciavattone made the list – with a now standing 103 USAWA Records.  Big congrats to Jeff on this.  Jeff has records going back to his teenage years in the USAWA so this is an accomplishment he has worked long and hard at.

The Womens Century Club has been unchanged, with RJ still at the top with 292 records.  Denny Habecker continues to build his lead in the Mens Century Club with 622 USAWA Records. The biggest record mover this time around is LaVerne Myers, who added 18 records to his listing. LaVerne now stands in 10th place overall, passing Bob Hirsh.

I really hate to see people fall out of the Century Club.  But that will happen if some of your records get broken and you haven’t been setting new ones to offset it.  This time Dave Glasgow slipped out of the club listing and is setting at 98 records.  I will have to encourage Dave to get back after it and set some new records so he can get back in the century club!!

Now who’s going to be next in the Century Club?  I predicted Jeff was going to make it several months ago, so I’m pretty confident in my ability to make this prediction.   So here it goes – I predict Aidan Habecker will be the first teenager to make it.   I also am going to put my money on Scottish Johnny.  He has been tearing up the records this past year and is moving up his count faster than most realize.  I predict both will be the Century Club by the end of the year. So guys – don’t let me down!!

Lifter of the Month – Jeff Ciavattone

The USAWA Lifter of the Month for November is JEFF CIAVATTONE.  Jeff lifts out of Frank’s Barbell Club in Walpole, Mass and recently won the New England Fall Classic.  Jeff put up some great lifts to beat a high quality field of lifters.

One of his lifts that really stood out to me was his Ciavattone Grip Deadlift of 501 pounds.  It broke a long standing USAWA record of 485 pounds held by Bill Spayd.  There have been very few lifters that have exceeded 500 pounds in the Ciavattone Grip Deadlift, and now Jeff is part of that group.

A big CONGRATS goes to Jeff for this month’s lifter of the month award!

One thing I can always count on is that Frank Ciavattone will promote an outstanding meet! Frank promoted the USAWA National Championships last weekend, and it was one of the smoothest ran National Meets we have ever had.  We had 19 lifters (4 women and 15 men) compete over the course of 6 lifts on one platform and one day, and was finished by 5 oclock!

There was an extremely tight race for the women’s overall.  Cassie Morrison edged out her friend Lindsey Beary on her last lift in the Trap Bar Deadlift. Only 2 adjusted points separeted them when it was done. Susan Sees was very close behind them by 10 points, and Jessica Hopps only 30 points back. On any given day any of these gals could have taken the overall!

Joe Ciavattone Jr. won the Men’s Best Overall Lifter title over James Fuller. Joe Jr. had several lifts he really excelled at – his big 105K Heels Together Clean and Press and his 4th attempt in the Continental Snatch at 93KG. James lifted very solid all day finishing with a personal record in the Trap Bar Deadlift at 277.5KG. Randy Smith finished 3rd overall despite hurting his elbow on the Cheat Curl and finishing the day not full strength.  Joe Ciavattone Sr. also got injured on the Cheat Curl, hurting his shoulder. But after a trip to the ER was able to make it back with his arm in a sling as the meet was winding down.  Jeff Ciavattone seems to get bigger and stronger each time I see him!  He lifted very well even though he told me with his work schedule he has not been able to train recently! Jeff and his dad Frank had a great showdown in the One Arm Ciavattone Grip Deadlift, with Jeff making 110KG and Frank making 115KG.  Big Frank still amazes me with his gripping strength!

Newcomer to Frank’s Barbell Club Rocky Morrison came in 5th Overall, which is quite an accomplishment in his first Nationals.  I really enjoyed meeting and visiting with Rocky.  He will be a great addition to our organization.  Dino Gym member Dean Ross made the longest drive to Boston, driving over 1000 miles from Oklahoma. Dean came into this meet as strong as I’ve seen him.  He finished with a great 162.5KG Trap Bar Deadlift.

Several lifters were not able to take all the lifts as they are recovering from injuries and/or surgeries. This included Frank, Chad Ullom, Denny Habecker, and Aidan. However, they still performed very well in the lifts they did and supported our biggest meet of the year.  For that – they need applauded!

I want to really thank Frank, his family, and his club for all the work they did in putting on this Championships.  The loaders did a great job and helped make the meet move along at the pace it did.  The food the night before and after the meet was fantastic!  Frank knows how to be a great host!

New England Gold Cup

by Frank Ciavattone

Frank's Barbell Club member Jeff Ciavattone performed a 193 KG 2" Bar Hack Lift on the same day at a Record Day in England hosted by Steve Gardner and the Burton Powerhouse Gym.

The New England Gold Cup was a big success! On that particular week Jeff my son was in England! Steve Gardner would also have his team compete as well that day Nov. 29! They competed as a record breaker day as well. They had three referee’s on all lifts and lifted under the New England Gold Cup theme to make Jeff was able to compete and Steve’s team made him feel at home! Our team in New England were honored of there thoughtfulness of Steve and his team! There results all speak for them selves! Great job to Steve and his team!

The New England Gold Cup could not have been the success it was without the help of USAWA President Denny Habecker Barry Bryan! They both came in from Pennsylvania with over a 400 mile drive the day before. They helped me with all the aspects of running the meet. Especially with both of them being referees it helped to have all lifts be USA and World records! The next to come a long distance was Jim Fuller who came down from Maine! Between Denny, Barry and Jim the three out of state lifters turned in some super lifting! There were a lot of experienced Olympic lifters training at the venue and there eyes would all turn to watch these 3 when they lifted. As there is a lot of experience amongst the three! The rest of my team did so well that I feel you will be hearing a lot from them in the future! There turning into great lifters along with them already being ladies and gentleman. This team has the utmost respect for each other! All of there goals were met as the results indicates!

I would also like to mention Paul Dalallis’s entry as a wheelchair athlete! He gave an excellent demonstration of the importance that what this sport would do for these special athletes! Then proceeded to perform a left handed upright row, while seated. The weight was loaded on a makeshift type kettlebell and weighed 61 lbs. It was inspiring to watch this 57 year old athlete who is an amputee battling Cancer! Paul is now a USAWA member and a true example of the word COURAGE!

As far as my record of 404lb. In the One Hand Dead, it put me in the record books to have a 400lb. plus One Hand Deadlift in 5 different age groups! Do to illness’s at age 55 to 58 this lift was impossible, till the New England Gold Cup!

The finally was a home cooked turkey dinner by Colleen at our home! All the lifters received there Gold Cups and comradeship by all! Looking forward to 2015!!!
