……can you tell me what a Saxon Snatch is……I’m prepared for the jokes about Thom not knowing what a Snatch is.

Thom,
I have no idea what that lift is either, lol. Glad someone besides me was wondering.

One of Arthur Saxon’s grip feats was performing a snatch with a 3″ thick wood plank. I was thinking we could use the block bar in the gym for this lift. Of course, this is just a “tentative” lift and if someone wants something different give me a suggestion. Al

What’s a block bar?
Maybe that’s a dumb question, but I’ve never heard of that. Are we talking just pieces of steel at different weights or something?

The block bar is a bar that contains a piece of rectangular tubing for its gripping surface. It has been highlighted in a Daily News story titled “block bar Curls”. You can find this story using the tag search. Saxon had a plank 15 foot long, 3″ thick and 10″ wide, that he would snatch using a pinch grip in his shows, when he was performing with the Ringling Brothers Circus in the early 1900’s. Pretty remarkable performance of grip strength. Al

3″ pinch? Looks nasty, but fun. I want to try and make this competition. Not sure how well I’d do but it looks fun.

I’m too fat for pullups.
And Dave, I’m pretty sure all my injuries of the summer have healed (fingers crossed) so I’m coming to McPherson Games. I’m going to try to throw this weekend.

I’d be up for this contest! Even though I don’t do overhead stuff anymore (left shoulder is a goner) I’d still put up token poundages and do the other stuff to the best of my ability.

Any suggestions where to get a lifting ring? I have one that I got with a highland games weight about ten years ago, but I need to get another one to try the Dinnie lift.
Also, is there a date set for this?
I’m sorry to hear about your shoulder issue, Ben.

Randy, The Dino Challenge will be on a Saturday, the third weekend of January. I’ll try to get an entry form up on the website within the month. I got lots of ring handles – I will send you one! Al

Eric, I’ll try to get the entry form up soon. It will probably be after I get back from Worlds though. Looks like this meet has generated lots of interest so far. Al

Josh Dale is interested in this contest as well. He has the horsepower in his hands to really push a lot of guys.

Also wanted to ask about the 2″ Axle Al. Isn’t your replica about 240lbs empty? What about those of us who can’t do that weight, do you have an alternate (like an Ironmind Apollon’s Axle) instead?

Ben, Yes – I will have a way for everyone to do any of the events in this oldtime strongman comp. This competition will follow the rules of the USAWA, which means you select the weight for your attempts. This is one major difference from the current, modern strongman competitions where the weight of the event is selected for you by the meet director. I want to make this for everyone. You will receive three attempts per event, just like any other USAWA meet. Al
