Yeah, I caught the 1064 also, Joe. I believe that Bill started staging contests in 1959, not just in weightlifting but in sports he had never even seen contested before and knew nothing about them!
If any of you have issues of S&H from 1968, Bill was featured in the “Hats Off” section one month and his involvement in a wide variety of sports was described there. That blew my mind when I read it in real time.

I don’t know what I would do without you two guys catching these kind of things! Thom is such a gifted writer that he doesn’t even have to re-read ONCE what he writes so typos are pretty common for him. I normally clean up these things for him, and I can’t believe this one slipped by me. (or maybe I let it slip by me on purpose since he was mentioning the year he was born, and we all know he is starting to show his age??? haha)

You guys want to seriously now how that happened…..I wasn’t wearing my glasses and I NEED to wear them. However, you guys have to admit, that would be a pretty clever joke on how long Clark’s been around!!!!!

Thom, good story man…keep them coming. Funny to note that Bill wouldn’t of done weightlifting if he did not first run a boxing club.

Abe, what’s funny is back in the day a “gym” always had boxing! The old JWC gym had several boxers who would spar. We always had a speed bag and a heavy bag in the gym and at one time had a roped of ring for sparing!!!!

So TRUE!!! That’s how modern fitness is different from the ole days of physical culture.
Physical Culture was conducted in “Gyms”, short for gymnasium which meant it was for physical activity and sports, and included activities such a weight training, boxing, and wrestling.
Modern fitness is conducted at “health clubs”. After a brish walk on a treadmile (in the ole days if you wanted to walk you did that outdoors), you may enjoy a nutritious smoothie shake at the clubs health bar, followed by a rub down by one of the masseurs on staff.
WE ARE GETTING SOFT!!!! (says the dinoman)

Clarks: No treadmill, no smoothies, no showers, but it is climate controlled. In other words the climate controls the temp.

And don’t forget all the free rubbing liniment – you will get “covered” in axel grease if you aren’t carefull!!!

Thanks for the positive comments. I’m going tomorrow to take Wayne on the virtual tour. I gave him the York tshirt and he was wearing it the next day!

A buddy of mine called up there a few years ago to ask if they had the old school shirts, we ordered a few each. Anyway, he took one and mailed it to Norb Schemansky (sp?) along with a letter asking him to please sign it for him and a return envelope; he even sent him a marker to sign it. He was thrilled when he got it back along with a business card and went to have it professionally framed with red, white and blue mats and it now hangs next to his squat rack. It’s an awesome piece.

Travis, I sent Norb a photo and he signed it for me and sent me his business card along with a really nice note. My Uncles saw him split snatch 363 which in think is the greatest split snatch of all time.

The longevity of his career and overcoming the back surgeries is just awesome. I’ve trained with guys who complain about their backs and that buddy of mine will always pull out the Norb card and tell them “Norb did it.” We actually give that fellow some hell for his man crush on Norb. His biography was a pretty good read.
