I sent them a video of me doing a 535.5lb Jefferson Lift-Fulton Bar at the Gold Cup this year AND the lift WAS passed!!
I’ve been practicing muscle control since before I took up lifting. I was fascinated by how the muscles could be controlled voluntarily. Noticed the more I practiced, the more overall control I gained. Great article John!!
Yeah,Ben,you are right. It isn’t a grip feat but definitely a superb wrist feat. I feel that a strong wrist and a strong grip (should) go together.
Damn fine work!! You are sooo awesome!!
Interesting to me Ben, was that afterwards Al related to me that he feels his Highland Games training/competition using ring weights makes him do well at this lift. I thought it was an astute observation. He explained how the throws with the ring weights are thumbbless out of necessity. Also, he showed me that most is the force is applied for the throw with your hands open/fingers extended. He made the lift look easy. With a 555lb 3″ bar Deadlift on the books, I too feel Al is a gripster.
Sounds like 1970’s Rest-Pause training and Jeff Magruder’s over reaching followed by rebounding Bench routine he used in the 1980’s.
Ruth, I think that’s great. I think getting the word out there is necessary. How can people know we exist if we don’t tell them??
I would welcome any and all help on making one. Thanks.
how ’bout the Heavy lift championships??
You sayin’ I shouldn’t listen to my ‘dick’??
We’ve all heard stories of the Phantom Lifter. You know the one: Still cut to shreds after Thanksgiving,Christmas and New Years, Benches 400+,Squats 600+,usually a cousin to the storyteller. Friend of mine manages a local gym. Been hearing ’bout so and so’s cousin in the Marine Corps, almost makes it in for a workout while home for the holidays, year after year. Big,cut and strong…yada, yada, yada. The guy makes it in and IS big,cut and STRONG!! Manager friend of mine spots him(not that he needed it) for sets of eight on the bench with 405. Next time in, guy is squatting 600 for fives. This would be the ONLY time in 29 years of lifting, I’ve know the Phantom Lifter to show up!!Maybe saying I don’t know what I’d do without one is a bit extreme. The longer I lift, the more I think I’d rather train off blocks instead. Much less stress on the bar by having the weight supported by the plates rather than the bar being slowly bent around a pin on each side.
Ironically, I bought a rack to try the isometric/isotonic training Bill Starr talked about in Ironman magazine. That was almost 30 years ago and I finally tried this training for a couple of workouts LAST WINTER!! At this point I use my rack for Pullups,Dips and as a safety for Squats,Benches and Jerks from the rack. Regarding Sumo Squats, check out this vid of me doing them in my rack. Years ago I ‘flipped’ the floor supports so I could go Sumo.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAWC7AMrgmM&feature=player_detailpage
Its kinda funny, I can tell you everything ‘wrong’ with my Bench and Power Rack but, I’ve gotten used to “gettin’ around” these shortcomings that I don’t give it another thought. Well, the ‘pins’ on my rack are not pins and I wish they were. I guess those are the one thing that still gives me fits when they decide to bind. So what do you think about blocks Al?MFDL will be you main event?? Then I guess I’m going to move on to something else!!! Your middle fingers are TWICE as long as mine!
A superb job(as usual) Timo. You should be proud!!
I suppose with the 18″ VBAR you could stand on a bench or chair and do Bent Rows to help work the grip in a different way. Even just swinging it around a bit could help as well.
I don’t believe so.
