I wish I could help you out with the answer to this Abe, but the secret for me to not hear the “popping” is to just turn the stereo in the gym up louder. LOL Al
In my opinion, this is one of the best strength training centers around. Scott is constantly adding more equipment and weights. Opening this was almost a must, as our training group has expanded to the point that the Dino Gym alone is too small to handle things anymore.
It’s looking like the Dino Strength Training Center will soon be the host of the BIGGEST EVENT in our organization – the IAWA World Championships in 2012. Plans are not set firmly yet on this, but once approved at this year’s IAWA World Meeting it will be. Al
That Monsters of the Mall comp was one of the most amazing promotions I have ever been part of. Scott did an awesome job with it – and looking back it even seems more impressive considering the guys in attendance. I’ll never forget the log press in that meet. I was loading and wondering “how much higher is this thing going?” Great times… Al PS I also bent the axle on my trailer hauling that heavy load to Salina that weekend, and had to buy a new trailer after that. haha
That Flour Packing Competition looks pretty interesting to me! I may have to start training for it! (in which case I’ll HAVE to build a flour packing apparatus). It is part of the tradition at the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous coming up on Feb 23-26, 2012. I did a little research on this festival and it looks like quite the event! And Thom, you can come along with me – they also have a beard growing contest that you can enter. haha
That was an impressive video! Thanks Tom.
Also, that was a very interesting safety device that held the flour before and after the course. It appeared the real challenge was the footing (obviously ice and snow underfoot). I still say having a loaded bar on the shoulders is much more challenging than having weight in a pack, or loaded on the shoulders with a yoke. Regardless, that looked like a real challenge carrying the flour. I wonder – what was the significent of this? Is there a flour mill nearby that sponsored this competition?
Last winter I was contacted by Brian Tabor of San Diego who wanted to give the Inman Mile a go. Brian is a physical stud. He won the 2010 NAS Strongman Nationals in the 175# Division. I really thought if anyone could get this conquered it would be him. I told him I would go to San Diego to judge it for him when he was ready to make it official in the USAWA. I’m still waiting!!
Here is a YouTube video of his initial training – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPOZ1Js46iw
You still couldn’t do it Tedd! Especially now since you have been loading up on barbecued ribs and greasy chicken wings cooked on your Big Green Egg. haha
John, I’m not gonna argue with you on THAT ONE! I have been to the Ambridge BBC and if I lived anywhere close that would be MY PLACE to train as well. The Ambridge BBC has all the things that inspire me (the old Jackson DBs, the old York Plates and bars, the weathered powercages, etc.), as well as group of lifters that KNOW how to train to get strong.
I was thinking about the whole “lunk” concept a little more today over lunch. It dawned on me that we are definitely a minority, with my guess less than 1% of all gym goers today. Very few people go to the gym to get stronger nowadays. The Dinoman
Here’s another link to a blog of Dave’s about this famous db of Franks: http://vintage-barbell.blogspot.com/2007/04/my-new-globe-dumbbell.html
Ben, You are correct in noticing that, as I had as well. However, on the “other side” of it not being a Inch DB replica, the weight of this db listed was incorrect as well. It weighs 267#s (which makes it an amazing feat to lift one handed!). Frank has given this db to his friend Dave Hartnett, who now has it in his iron collection. Dave has quite the collection of weights and old equipment, and I hope someday to be able to see it.
Here is a link to his blog containing info on this db: http://vintage-barbell.blogspot.com/2007/04/frank-lifting-267-lb-monster.html
You have to check out what Steve Pulcinella of Iron Sport Gym has to say in response. Youtube video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBRG4RkE51Q
I don’t think it was intended as a joke (which makes it all that more funny!!!). There are several YouTube Videos telling similiar stories about Planet Fitness’s NO TOLERANCE rule for lunks. This is so funny I think I going to write a blog now about all the “lunks” in the Dino Gym!!! haha Dinoman
Shucks….just my luck. I already copied that picture, printed it off, and it’s now hanging on the wall of the Dino Gym!!!!!!
That’s right Big T, my dad really threw me “under the bus” on this one. For some reason my wife hated that picture of her and made me promise not to put it on Facebook, which I agreed to. But there is still diasagreement on whether I also promised not to put it on the website – she thinks she said “internet” but I know for a fact she said “facebook”. Either way, I didn’t think she would EVER see it because she has only looked at the USAWA website ONCE (and that was when I told her I had written a nice story about my grandfather, and I thought she ought to read it).
The Dino Man is still working this problem out, and when that is done, be ready for the second installment of Dear Dino Man on “Marriage Advice for Weightlifters”. The Dino Man
So far I haven’t received any hate mail from angry wifes calling me a sexist pig!!!!! hahaha the dinoman
