I am hoping to be there on Sunday. I wish I could be there the entire weekend, but I got other plans that will tie me up on Saturday. Al
Tedd, I’m glad to see you got a great home set up for lifting, now you don’t have any excuse not to enter a USAWA meet. Al
I don’t know what to make of that John – must be all due to amazing genetics!! haha Dinoman
My offer still stands if anyone wants to write a tribute to John Schubert. In doing my research for todays story, I couldn’t find out much about him in old Strength Journals. It appeared to me that he hadn’t competed in very many USAWA events. I only found meet results for him from the early 90s. Al
I really have enjoyed the last two stories (Daves and Larrys) as well. Both stories reflected a common theme – and that is that weight lifting is more than just “going through the motions” to get stronger. Dave’s had to do with the motivation of pushing yourself to the max, and Larry’s had to do with the “science” behind why different programs work better than others.
I have been lifting hard for close to 30 years now. I have tried so many different training programs through the years, and it seems my training is constantly “evolving”. Most of the time I don’t think of physiologic factors when changing my programs. I just do what I feel like doing and HOPE for the best! I’m sure many other lifters do the same as me. Articles like Larry’s cause me to look at my own training in a “different light”. Al
I never got to meet John. If anyone else wants to write a tribute about him for the website, please send it to me. Al
First of all Dave – you are EXACTLY correct in your statements of having goals in training. That’s what it’s all about – And this Burtzloff Barbell has been a goal of mine to lift ever since Bob gave it to me over 10 years ago. I must have tried it at least a half dozen times over this course of time and failed. The last “failure” was early on in June where I had it to knee height before my grip failed. This pissed me off more than any of the misses before, so this summer I have committed training “specifically” for this barbell by doing lots of fat bar deadlifts (2″, 2.5″ and 3″).
I remember when Bob gave this Challenge Barbell to me he told me that it would be a challenge for me to get it. He must have known my abilities perfectly, because it always just seemed a little “out of my reach”, until I committed training with the sole intent of lifting it.
It will forever be resting on the floor of the Dino Gym for anyone else who wants to take the challenge. To date the only lifters that have lifted it are myself, Jon Conners, Warrick Brandt, and Matt Graham. Dinoman
Chad – You sure didn’t look like you had any back issues this past weekend at Team Nationals! Good lifting partna! Al
Jarrod, That pretty much is how the reverse curl is done in the USAWA. Now the IAWA rules for this lift are a different story…..once again. Dinoman
Thom, Good story – but I have no idea what you are talking about me dying my beard. It was as dark as it ever was – just check my pictures from Worlds last fall and you will see it was just as dark there. I just want to set the record straight on that one!!!!! haha Al
Oh it’s going to get better than this!!! haha
I should mention that everyone is on this week’s “hit list” of being made fun of. No one is safe!!!! haha Al
Chad – You may get your wish on this request!!! haha Al
So all I had to do was ask????? That MUST have been the problem.
Tedd, Could you send me 25 stories for the website? I’ll be waiting patiently. Al
Plus I’m going to dedicate an entire week of making fun of Thom with these “reruns”. And he’s not going to be the only person in “the scope”! haha
