ABOUT IMPOSSIBLE!
This piece of equipment is really old-school and not very many gyms even have one, and if they do, it is usually not really a functional Roman Chair to do the lifts we do (most are hyperextensions or a ham-glute machine). I built my own, and added on a back safety bench that I can adjust the height on. Al
I very rarely do pullovers, and when I do I use my roman chair (with safety bench raised to rest my upper back on) so I can hook my feet. I use big enough plates that I can start on the floor. It’s a great exercise, but when I’m working my upper back I usually rather do rows or pulldowns. Al
Abe – One thing I have learned over 25 years of lifting is that THINGS CHANGE as you age. What works when you are younger doesn’t necessary work when you are older. This is different for everyone. I used to train my lower body (legs and back) heavy a couple times per week and STILL do at least two hard highland game workouts that included back/leg stuff like the WOB and caber. I could NEVER handle that training volume now. I now have a rule for myself that I can only train back/legs twice per week with at least two days rest between workouts, and it works very well for me in terms of recovery. The only drawback is you have to cram alot of stuff into these two days to make this happen. Typically these two workouts are 3 hours or more in length for me. I also like to train at least 5 days per week, so on my other three days I do a upper body day, a stretching/ab day, and a cardio/grip/stretching day. These workouts are pretty easy compared to my two heavy back/leg days but still lets me get into the gym to have a little fun. Al
I’m sure most of you that know Chad probably realized that he didn’t look quite the same in that picture of him receiving his award as he really looks. And you are right! That person is actually NOT Chad, but his stand-in look alike that he hires for occassions when he has to be in two places at the same time. He had another more pressing engagement the night of the banquet so he sent this guy instead. This guy is a great imposter and fools most people. He only responds to the names “Chad” or “the Champ”. He even knows all of Chads corny stories and tells them over and over. I tried to “trip him up” by offering him some blue scotch (which MOST people wouldn’t drink except for Chad), but he downed the shot with no problem. I wish I knew his real name. I heard someone call him Mr. Jenkins, which might be it.
Good luck Jarrod with the competition – and you will greatly enjoy that trip! Al
THE TRUTH: Team JWC overdosed on pancake syrup at Pancake City, and were in a daze from a suger high!! They were about as docile as a Tom Cat that I just fed a tranquilizer pill to!!
I just want to “second” what Thom said today in the USAWA Daily News about Mitch and Tedd. The loaders often get overlooked and not thanked to the degree they should. These guys did an exceptional job, and if it wasn’t for them, we would have been lifting late into the night. Since I was the announcer with the responsibility of keeping the meet on pace, I could not have got us done in the time we did without the hard work of these two. In summary: 18 lifters with 6 lifts on only one platform, with extra attempts for records close to 400 total attempts in 7 hours of lifting time That is close to one lift per minute!!! Very few meets I have been to has the meet went so efficient. And on top of this – these guys made NO MISLOADS (sure I had to catch a couple before they happened, but that doesn’t count against them!). These guys are “professionals” and should take this job on the road. Al PS and I forgot to mention that because of their “perfect record” of loading all their drinks that night were free because of me. haha

Guys – that’s what you call LEADERSHIP!! (and I got an award to prove it!) haha Truthfully, there were lots of people involved that deserve credit. Thom put on one TOP NOTCH event and I was just glad to be part of it. THANKS EVERYONE. Al
Come on Thom – I KNOW how to get to your place! I don’t even get lost getting there cuz its in the sticks like my place:
Drive through Kirksville looking for Pancake City. If you see it you’re on the right road. Keep driving until you see the alien space ship. It is easy to recognize because it looks like a giant golf ball. Then turn left onto the muddy road. Put your vehicle in 4-wheel drive. Keep driving and don’t get distracted by the cattle and horses mating with each other. Eventually you go over a big hill that seems to drop into some sort of crevice. At this point most people turn around and go back to the highway, but don’t, just keep going and try to pick up speed so you can make it back to the top of the next hill. There are no signs to direct you at this point. Thom just calls it Morgan road because he named it himself after his daughter. No one else recognizes it as that. Also, watch out for the huge boulders next to the road. The road eventually comes to a dead end and at that point turn right onto the cow path. Go that ways a while and look for the Highland Games Standards. When you see those you’re there!
The meet will be held at the Armory with the banquet being held at the Dukum Inn. I will try to get a blog up tomorrow giving directions to these locations. Al
This is a Nationals you don’t want to miss. Thom has made plans to make this a VERY FUN time for everyone. The Nationals is our biggest meet of the year and if you can make it, you SHOULD!
Chuck – I think Big T is “calling you out”!!!!
Chuck, You forgot one of the other things that has changed during our 17 years of training together – YOU CAN NOW DEADLIFT MORE THAN ME!!!! haha Al
