Ben – that sounds like a great topic, just don’t forget to send it in this time! BTW – a picture is required. All good News Stories need to have a picture to illustrate the message! Al

Jarrod – great idea! I know the videos of lifters performing the all round lifts in competition is beneficial, but not the same as an instructional video. Maybe that’s a project I need to work on!!! Al

Have you checked out the Half-Gardner and Full-Gardner lifts yet? They use a bar, and are similar to the TGU but start at the top position. The Full-Gardner is really difficult as you first lie down, and then stand back up like a TGU!! Keeping a bar balanced is much harder than holding a kettlebell. Al

Welcome noman! As for training programs, you need to select a type of program that will help you accomplish your set goals. Are you interested in gaining strength? Or are you more interested in improving your athletic ability thru functional strength? How much time can you devote to training? The answers to questions like these are very important in setting up the optimal strength program for someone.

Equipment needed can be very minimal for lots of exercises. If you have a bar and a few hundred pounds of plates you can do most strength exercises. There are lots of places to find bars and plates on the internet, or even probably at local businesses. I have spent years building my gym – it is impossible to get everything you want to start with. The basic starting point is a good bar, a set of 45 bumpers, and 300-400 pounds of steel plates.

That is outstanding! A great lift is over 100 pounds with a dumbbell or kettlebell. I agree that keeping your eyes on the implement is key. Al

The Inman Mile is an official USAWA event, but it is VERY different from a Farmers Walk. First of all, a loaded bar of set weight is on the back instead of weights in the hands. No records are established for the Inman Mile. Records are kept first for distance and then if accomplished, for time.

The problem with the Farmers Walk being an official USAWA lift is how do you go about setting rules for it when it can be done in so many different ways – i.e. different implements, different handles, different distances and weights, etc. That is why it is a strongman event and NOT a weightlifting event. The Farmers Walk was once proposed by the membership and turned down for these reasons. You can’t have records if you don’t have rules, and you can’t have a lift if you don’t have a rule. Al

At the Oldtime Strongman Challenge, the Cyr Press was done several different ways. The all rounders either held the db to the side and jerked it or push pressed it. The strongman did more of a strongman press with it (a pushpress with a press out). ET and Chris Anderson were out of this world with this event. (ET did a 190!). Both turned the db on end on the shoulder, resting one end of the db on their shoulder before the overhead portion. Al

I have always pronounced it “seer”, and that is the way I have heard it pronounced. But then again, I have been accused of speaking “Kansan” before.

Jarrod – As for the Cyr Press, that is NOT an official IAWA lift (or a USAWA lift). There are no records in it. The only all round comp it has been in has been the Dino Gym Oldtime Strongman Challenge in Jan. To find out more about the Cyr Press, just do a search of the article tags on the right of the home page. You will find the relevant blogs under Cyr or Cyr Press. Al

Did anyone else notice how big Thom’s hand looks in that picture of him pressing the anvil? It looks like he has a king-sized mitt!! haha I have had enough pictures taken of me with a big fish to have learned this “photo illusion” to also make my catch look bigger!!! Just hold it out closer to the camera!! haha Al

You are VERY lucky to get to train with Frank. He is one of the most experienced all-rounders in the USAWA, and as well, one heck off a great guy!!! Al

I really liked it as well. I hope someday to meet Stan. It’s Dave’s best story to date for the website. In fact it was SO good I’m putting him on staff as a weekly columnist. However, it may take him a few months to get paid what Thom gets! haha Al
