Plus John Vernacchio, Bill DiCioccio Sr., and Jack Lano. Where there others??
Ok – time for me to start giving hints. This quiz is harder than I thought it would be! I’m going to give up the three names that about everyone has got – Bill, Joe, and Art.
This leaves only two left. One to me is very obvious and the other is the “wild card” that no one has named yet. All I’m going to say is that he hasn’t competed every year but always maintains a USAWA membership. Several longterm members joined over the next couple of years (but NOT in 1988). Please keep trying!!! Al
I just put 25 photos from the Grip Championships on the USAWA Facebook page. Al
Boston has a couple of very active clubs with Joe’s Gym and Franks Barbell Club. Frank hosted the Gold Cup this past fall in Walpole. How far is that from you? Al
Mike – You had an EXCELLENT day!! I would say that is a pretty good way to celebrate your birthday. If I would have known ahead of time I would have baked you a B-Day cake. haha Al
Sunday night after the record day I introduced Denny to my Gin & Tonics and before long he revealed to me ALL of his training secrets which I plan to implement in my training immediately. I’m sure he doesn’t even remember what he told me, and without my “persuasive beverage” he probably would have kept these secrets from me. I consider myself like Robin Hood, but I steal secret knowledge from the rich and give to the poor….meaning myself!!! Al
Thanks Steve. I really wanted to get that 555 because it was 5 more pounds more than what my brother-in-law Bob Burtzloff did about 10 years ago when he was the age I am now. Those kind of things are good topics to bring up at family holiday dinners!! haha
Truthfully, I don’t consider myself much of a “grip guy” and the 3″ deadlift really clouded who the best grip man in the group was (Ben Edwards). Ben clearly beat me on the other more grip-style events, and really deserved to be the winner. Afterwards, I questioned myself in having the 3″ deadlift in this meet. I guess just because it is a grip lift for me (I can do more on a regular bar) this doesn’t ring true for everyone when the back becomes the limit before the grip.
The funny thing is our judge Scott Tully should have been competing instead of judging. The next day at the record day he put up these great grip lifts: 358# Fulton Bar Ciavattone grip dl, 232# in the one hand 2″ VB, a 77# one hand pinch grip, and a 414# 2 bar 2″ VB deadlift!!!!! Al
Again, I want to thank everyone for the great weekend at the Dino Gym. I KNOW it was enjoyed by all! I especially want to thank our USAWA Prez Denny Habecker for making the long drive here. I have competed with Denny many times and his act of sportsmanship that he showed at this meet doesn’t surprise me at all – I have seen it before!! He is a class individual and the PERFECT representative of our organization as our President. Al
I was really surprised how close the votes were. It goes to show that EVERYONE’S stories were enjoyed. Thom – three more votes and you would have won. That’s how close it was. You need to talk to your fellow JWC members cause they kinda let you down by not voting. haha Al
We will miss you Joe!!! You know you’re welcome anytime to stay at the Holland Hotel. As you know, the room has an open bar!! haha Al
Last call for votes!! You have no idea how close this is. All story writers have received votes and it is very close! At this point there is a tie for first, and another is only 2 votes out of first. If you have not sent in your vote yet – DO IT!! I will be accepting votes till the end of today, but tomorrow morning I’m announcing the winner!!! This is one of those elections where 1 vote DOES really count!!! Al
Ben, I would DEFINITELY agree with your guesses. I was going to list “my predictions” but they are only 10-20 pounds different from yours in the lifts. It is looking like it will be a good meet – with around a dozen competitors. I have decided to do the meet in the gym on the platform like last year. The storm is supposed to come through this area tomorrow and Wednesday and be nice this weekend. Al
There’s still time to enter the grip challenge!!! I now will be taking entries up till the meet day – so if you have just been thinking about it, you can STILL ENTER!!!! It is looking to be a fun meet!!! Al
HAHA – good one Thom!!!
Tom, You beat Meek in the Steinborn!! Not too many lifters can say that they outsquatted Brian Meek in a competition!! Al
