man i hope so! my ligament tear/L5 problem may be chronic. but i think the worst case scenario will be no back squats for life, which quite honestly is okay with me.
jf
thanks al, you’re absolutely right about mindset being key. i’m very lucky to be under good chiropractic care, & besides, i’m getting a lot of cardio & grip training in right now! also i’m practicing my lifts awkward rather than heavy. using a barbell for my TGUs, lifting railroad ties, etc. thanks for the encouragement.
jf
hey glad you’re doing well, it gives me hope for my recovery. i’m back to light training at this point, which is almost harder than being restricted.
jf
al, glad you had fun. since i moved to colorado, everyone makes fun of me for eating catfish.
jf
glad you had fun al, where did you go?
i learned a long time ago that if you ask 6 boxing coaches the correct way to do a jab, you’ll get 6 different answers. it looks like it’s the same with weightlifting too! (although i’m not sure why you’d ask a weightlifting coach how to jab, but anyway…)
my point is you can find experts of all opinions. i was reading an interview with a strength coach who advocated only pulling the deadlift just above your knees. others insist on full range of motion. some swear by it, others disregard it. in any case, our training is ultimately up to ourselves, that’s why i’m usually drawn to sports like this rather than team sports: at the end of the day you have to use what works for YOU.

got mine the other day too, great piece of equipment & i can’t wait to try it out. thanks al!

i’ve never met frank but i can tell from the record books that he’s a great athlete, & i can tell from how he is spoken of here that he’s a great guy as well. all the best to him & his family.

i’d like to see a vid if you get around to it, sometimes i have a hard time picturing what’s described. there are so many ways to develop imbalances, it’s maddening. thanks for the info, i will give it a shot when i’m healthier. i’m strictly off any resistance training right now.
i also wanted to mention that my chiropractor is guardian chiropractic in centennial, colorado. they do excellent care & are generously providing me treatment as an athletic sponsorship. i’ve been really happy with them.
jf
thank you for the feedback guys, i’ve been researching the heck out of this stuff since my injury. i wanted to include a bit on lateral stability too but the article was getting on in length. for that i’ve just been switching to a one-handed farmer’s walk instead of carrying in both hands.
61, i just shot you a message on youtube, but my back is fairly far from 100%. i got some x-rays yesterday that showed a previous ligament tear which is pushing my L5 forward. also i have two compressed discs in my upper back. in any case, as i’ve suspected for some time now, back squats just aren’t going to happen for me.
the good news is that yesterday i also received a very generous sponsorship from guardian chiropractic in centennial, CO, and am in very good hands. i’m meeting with them two more times this week and hope to know more by friday.

al, i think figure contests are a great idea. true to USAWA form, they should be just a little different from how everyone else does them. i am sure to win the 90kg potbelly competition.
jf
so i have nothing to gain by voicing this opinion, because i am terrible at squats and my bench press is nothing to brag about either. but i think that the way USAWA does things–no gear, no drugs–is different enough to warrant contesting the powerlifts. i’ve never competed in powerlifting, though i’ve thought about it a lot. the reasons i haven’t (besides the aforementioned squat issue) is 1) i don’t use steriods 2) i don’t want to use wraps & shirts.
jf
good stuff!
i kind of doubt that you’re not strong, bud. but i tell you what, you go ahead & dominate the TGU in your class, & i’ll own it at 90kg!
jf
i think that’s what i saw too. what i do with my straight leg to bring it under is this: i point my toes out, & focus on keeping my knee on the ground. then i pull my heel to my butt while i lift up my hips, & my knee ends up supporting my under my hips. don’t know if that makes any sense or not. 130 on your 5th time is AWESOME.
