John is living in Voorhees,New Jersey now. He had a stroke about a year and a half ago. The last I talked to him he said he was doing better but he still was not able to drive. He is also having some trouble with his eyes since the stroke. I tried to call him several times the last few weeks and all I got was his voice mail. I let a message but he hasn’t returned my calls. He hasn’t been able to train since he moved to Jersey.
If it wasn’t for John I would probably not ever have gotten involved with the USAWA. He is the one that got me started in the allrounds. I lifted in many meets at his gym in Collegeville and became a member of his club in 1987. I agree with Steve about John’s involvement with all 3 strength sports. I know one year when John was in 24 meets, inclulding powerlifting, Olympic lifting and allrounds. I really miss not seeing John on the lifting platform. He was one on the best lifters and greatest guys I know.Great choice! Congradulations Chad.
Cancel that message. I now have a partner
I would love to make on of those meets sometime but I think Art’s Birthday Bash will also be that weekend.
Sure you can. I have done it many times.
There couldn’t have been a better man to break it!
Al, I want a copy. I will get my membership money to you shortly.
I still feel we should make lifting suits mandatory. Almost every other organized sport requires some kind of uniform to compete. If we want our organization to have some credability we should require a lifting suit to be worn by all competitors.
Dale is really an inspiration to me, and he should be to anyone that knows him. It was great to see him at Art’s Birthday Bash and also finally meet his lovely wife. In spite of all his problems, Dale always encourages me and many other lifters at the meets he attends.
When I was young I used to do five sets of 5 reps in almost every lift and assistance exercise. Now I do 5×5 early in a cycle and as I get closer to a meet I will cut down on the reps as the weights get heavier. But with squats I almost always do sets of 10, 9,8, 7,6,and 5. The first 3 set are basically warm up sets that the weights never change, and the last three sets get heavier each week. For deadlifts, I have gotten great results [for me, as I am not a good deadlifter], doing just one set of 20 reps evry week with the weight getting 5 lbs. heavier each week.
I would have liked to be there, only the Keystone Games were this weekend and I have lifted in them every year since 1986.
No one deserved the Athlete of the Year more.
I just e-mailed Roger and asked me to send me the results. He did not figure anything out while I was there. It was a good meet, as I said in my previous post, but I don’t remember what actual pondages were lifted by which lifters, although I was impressed by many of the lifts. Scott Schmidt’s and my lifts can’t count as IAWA records though, because when we lifted there were only Roger and whichever one of us that wasn’t lifting, as the judges.
I just returned from the Black Swamp Meet. It was a great meet with a lot of new lifters to the All-rounds in it. I was very impressed with Andy Durniat’s one hand Deadlifts. He did 452 lbs with one hand and I think it was 521 with his other hand. There was some impressive lifting by most of the new members also. Scott Schmidt had his usual great meet. I don’t remember ever lifting before so many spectators at an All-round meet before. We lifted outside in the parking lot until the rain forced us inside, about 3/4 of the way through the meet.
I just talked to Dale this afernoon and he told me about his surgery. He also told me he is planning to come to York, and to Missouri for the Nationals. He just an amazing guy.
