Congratulation James. You really impressed me at the Heavylifts.
I was at that meet in York [as a spectator] where that picture was taken. I always enjoyed watching Wilbur lift. He was one of my favorite lifters, and one of few who were outstanding at both Olympic and Powerlifting.
Al, you are doing a great job. I am amazed you have the time to do all you do.
Dale will be missed. I remember the first few years I lifted in the USAWA, Dale and I were in the same age group and weight class and we had some great battles. He was always there to give you advice and encourgement. He was a great competitor and a realy great and couragous man.
I agree. Great Story!
Thanks guys. I didn’t expect this honor.
I agree that the men and woman should have completly separate divisions.
John also ran the 1987 National Masters, the 1991 Pan American Masters Championships, plus I can’t remember how many Eastern Masters Powerlifting and Weightlifting Championships and numerous other Olympic Lift and 3 lift Allround contests. The majority of the awards I have came from meets that John Vernacchio ran or ones I lifted in with him.
By the way, that is Andy Tomlin in that picture.
I talked John’s brother Sal yesterday and he told me the services for John will be on Thursday. He didn’t have any other details yet. He will let me know on Wednesday.
John’s friend Dee called us this morning and told us about John. It was John who got me and many others involved with All-Round Weightlifting. John was a great guy and a good friend. I will always remember the good times I had traveling with John and training at his gym.
I agree. I don’t know if thia organization would still exist without Al.
Have any of you lifters that lifted in the Heavylift Championships received your Medals or Posters from Roger yet. I talked to him the week after the meet and he said he was going to be sending those out. I haven’t received anything from him yet.
Run in with Police? After you dropped me off? I hope it wasn’t serious.
John is living in Voorhees,New Jersey now. He had a stroke about a year and a half ago. The last I talked to him he said he was doing better but he still was not able to drive. He is also having some trouble with his eyes since the stroke. I tried to call him several times the last few weeks and all I got was his voice mail. I let a message but he hasn’t returned my calls. He hasn’t been able to train since he moved to Jersey.
If it wasn’t for John I would probably not ever have gotten involved with the USAWA. He is the one that got me started in the allrounds. I lifted in many meets at his gym in Collegeville and became a member of his club in 1987. I agree with Steve about John’s involvement with all 3 strength sports. I know one year when John was in 24 meets, inclulding powerlifting, Olympic lifting and allrounds. I really miss not seeing John on the lifting platform. He was one on the best lifters and greatest guys I know. -
