Congratulations Denny!
Congratulations John!!
I have to admit, when he first announced it I was like, “oh no, whats wrong with Leroy?!” lol Got me!
Yeah, think I’ll give it a try after the xmas postal. Just need to figure out high, I assume training all 3 every week will lead to over training since they are so heavy?? Thoughts..??
If so, maybe stretch each of the 5’s 3’s and 531 over three Saturdays instead of all in one week, making it a 9 week cycle instead of 3..
Week 1, 5’s Hip/ Week 2, 5’s H&T / Week 3, 5’s Neck
Week 4, 3’s Hip/ Week 5, 3’s H&T / Week 6, 3’s Neck
Week 7, 531 Hip/ Week 8, 531 H&T / Week 9, 531 NeckCongrats Dean!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Speaking of, has anyone ever used 5-3-1 with the heavy lifts?

I’ve been using 5-3-1 since 2011. I mostly did variations of BBB while doing strongman. That way you get the heavy stuff in and 5 x 10 on mass work.
Since coming back from surgery I’ve mostly been sticking to 5’s pro with FSL(5×5), this lightens the weight and keeps the reps low for now. I don’t bench so a weeks workout is M:squat, W:overhead, T:deads, Sat:event training.I’m going to try and follow the Krypteia program (18 week cycle). I have program ADD swapping after a 6 week cycle so sticking with it will be a win in itself lol

Have a good trip!
Another factor could be skill development?
Would it be fair to say our decline in strength is somewhat masked by experience and practice, ironing out movement patterns thus squeezing out better performance?
I’m also interested in how power generation declines with ages, as we have many lifts that are explosive and not just about grinding out heavy weight.
Totally agree that training under the tutelage of an experienced coach will limit injuries and extend the training career.
I agree with the Exercise Science, Mark Rippetoe has a good video ranting about CSCS certs. lol
Thanks RJ! I’m scratching and clawing to get back where I was pre surgery. Its going well so far and I’m glad to be back competing. USAWA allows me to work around some issues. Strongman just beat me up too much, probably mostly my fault.
Another note on the formula.
An co-worker once said to me when I turned 35 and I was talking about getting weaker as I age. She told me that the strongest years are ahead, a man is stronger in his late 30s-40’s. I don’t know how true this is, if its a myth, if its the often talked about “old man strength” but I think I do feel stronger. So maybe the formula should even start later than 40? It seems another issue is trying to get everything even between us and IAWAUK, I think someone mentioned they use a different formula that used to start at 35? -
