Where’s the test…..If it’s like the last one I doubt I’ll recert….I think that last test was invalid.

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderDan….hahaha….good one.
Having been in the Marines and being fond of color guard duty I probably know more than most about the flag. I only get upset when it’s obvious someone is showing disrespect rather than when it’s inadvertent…HOWEVER, that can be a teaching moment!
I think our “attitude” as Americans is what sets us apart.
A quick story. I was stationed at Corry Station in Pensacola, Florida. It was a Navy base with several thousand Navy and a few hundred Marines. The base CO was a Rear Admiral. He wanted the Marines to do the colors. He said we “did it right”. Every morning (at lease when I did it) he would be standing and saluting from his window watching us.

This, like many things has been shrouded in time. Supposedly one story is this was from the fact Rose was of Irish descent and had to do more with that than being America and some dispute he made the statement. BUT, the fact is he did it and it caused some hard feelings with the British who’s judging in that Olympics went against Americans and the flag deal caught some of the blame…but I think it would have happened anyways.

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderRalph Rose was a shot putter at one of the first Olympics. He refused to dip the US flag to the King of England. Since that time it’s been a tradition to NOT dip the US flag to the host of the Olympics while every other country does. Rose allegedly said, “This flag dips for no earthly King”. It’s been a point of controversy every since as the US is the only country that regularly does it.

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderYes, it’s not the whole “on top” thing, simply a display issue.
However, I do agree with Ralph Rose…..and if you know who that is, you get a super bonus on being a patriot!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderLast year at World’s I purposely put the flag up like that to see who would notice, intending before the meet started to fix it. Nobody said a word until Glasgow walks in and his jaw drops and yells…”WHO HUNG THAT FLAG”! hahaha. You are one of the few non military people who would notice. There is actually quite a protocol for the flag, it’s not easy to remember all of them.

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderAl, I agree totally on all counts. I will say that Tim has asked the donations to come thru him as it creates a paperwork nightmare for the salvation army to use funds to rebuild a gym. Tim will make sure any money donated goes to fixing up the gym alone (unless you want it to go to the Salvation Army in general…then by all means!).
Also, Al, one time I asked my Uncle Wayne were all his trophies were….his wife had threw them in the trash when they moved to senior housing! Dozens of medals, plaques, and trophies (and not the cheap plastic crap you see now)…all GONE! I felt that same sense of sickness…some things just can’t be replaced. But you never give up and we need to help out others when we can.
