Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderI remember reading about Bonomo when I first started training in the 70’s. Great article!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderYeah, I had to pull more than my fair share….hahaha. Actually, if you look closely at the photo the side Al is on is bigger and has some more metal on it that made it heavier, so the whole thing was lopsided. Al is a better deadlifter than me so he got on that end and “choked” out to get leverage. That was a lot of fun!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderI propose a cook off between Tedd and Al on their Green Eggs. The rest of us will be judges. We will have the “Steak Round”, the “Bacon Round”, the “Chicken Round” followed by the “Dessert Round”…..may the best man win!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderI’m just thinking of what a bonding experience Al and Tedd will have over their Green Egg stories……and I hope they make me many, many meals and make sure you guys keep track of my favorites so you can be sure and make them whenever I visit!!!!!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderChad Ullom won the Open, I won the masters, and Felecia Simms won the Women in the HG.
The USAWA Record day on Sunday was attended by Al Myers, Molly Myers, Mike Murdock, Dave Glasgow and Amber Glasgow and myself. Everyone broke records even though it was outside and the temp gauge said it was 108 when I looked at it mid meet! I know a full write up is coming soon, but it was a success with everyone walking away hot, tired, but happy!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderI’ve called Wayne “Staggo” since we first started training. In the early WSM there was a strongman named Staggo Piczko from Holland. He was a HUGE man and he had this little bitty guy who was his trainer who made him look even bigger. We watched those on the Wide World of Sports and Wayne would laugh every time he’s see Staggo Piczko’s trainer yelling at Staggo. It just kinda stuck all these years. He used to call me Bob for Bob People’s because I deadlifted straight legged like People’s and my DL was twice my squat! When I hit a 600 squat he quit calling me that! I guess I earned it!
I’ll take it as a compliment that you think I looked like him!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderOk, here’s my 2 cents….which may be all this is really worth.
I found when I worked out every day it helped…..for awhile.
I found when I worked out once a week it helped….for awhile.
My point is IT IS MY BELIEF you need to cycle thru different works to keep things fresh. The one I am currently on is if I have a contest in, say 6 weeks, I have a “conditioning” week where I do some two a day workouts, with lots of cardio (which for me is football type conditioning drills and medicine ball throwing). This if followed by a 4 week cycle of lifting and throwing where the throwing is initially more focused on reps and technique and switches to more all out max effort throwing and the lifting changes from higher rep to lower rep with more weight. Then the last week I go an lift and throw, but warm up, hit one hard set or a couple of hard throws for each event, and call it good. I usually leave the gym a little taxed, but itching to finish the workout….that allows me to be fresh come contest day.
Variety is the spice of life….and workouts.

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderAl, I agree on David, he looked good for much more. I was amazed at his position and it’s when you watch a guy like him you can see how Saxon could have possibly done so much and if you try it yourself you can understand why this is such a great lift for a professional strongman because it was VERY unlikely….IMPOSSIBLE actually…that an amateur would step up and duplicate it.
I was inspired to write that article after finding that photo of Smith. He and a twin brother that could bent press as well. You can also tell that is an OLD photo of smith due to his hair! I never remember the guy with hair and I’ve known him all my life (late 60’s are my earliest memories).
Smith has been very please with the attention he has gotten. He’s pushing 80 and he was inspired by this and Dennis Mitchell at the Nationals and he’s planning a comeback!!!!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderChad, you deserve to be Athlete of the year even if you didn’t show up for our WOB Back Alley Challenge. I take my victory by default with a heavy heart as it would have been much more satisfying to have beaten the CHAMP and now the ATHLETE of the YEAR in fell swoop of my 56lb Saturn Rocket launch capabilities…..but I take the victory none the less. You probably won’t remember what happened……Al is right about you. HAHAHAHAHAAH
