The picture was taken in 1917. The Skull and Crossbones were the KCOS Team logo for all sports. This is an Osteopathic hospital after all! I’m guessing those pants are football pants.

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderTully, ATSU (then KCOS) used to play Truman (then called Kirksville Normal School) every year. I get the 6’6 because Dr Bohm was allegedly 6’4″ tall and there’s a picture of this guy with him and he’s taller than Dr. Bohm. They both threw and traveled to meets in the midwest throwing and after this guy left to join the Army in WWI Dr. Bohm writes about him winning the All Services Track & Field Championships in the shot put and discus. My problem is that I have two names for him and while I’m 90% sure that he’s the “right guy” I want to be 100% sure. This involves me going down to the museum and doing more research and that’s time consuming. I’ll e-mail you the two names I have. As for the info, in the yearbooks they talk about his “legendary exploits” on the field. That’s where I get all that. Althought I don’t recall him impregnating anyone with a stare…only Chuch Norris and Al Myers can do that and for Al it only works on cows……

But seriously, those things must be huge if that guy is 6’6″ tall.
Someday that story will be complete….but not yet. The reason is that if I write about this guy the University Museum will pick it apart if I don’t get all the facts. I have a pretty good idea of who it is and some of his exploits are almost unbelieveable, but well documented. And his story starts at…well…that will just have to wait.

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderThat is an awesome feeling after being injured and having a pain free day. Really makes you appreciate it! Somedays, I’ll workout and if I have a bad day just remember I’m thankful to be out there doing it…PERIOD!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderAl, I appreciate this article more than you’ll know. I bought into the whole “Deadlifts will make you slow” argument and dropped them for Power cleans, snatches the last 10 years. Now, I’m deadlifting again and oddly enough, the two places I was sore after my first deadlift workout in 10 years….My chest and my upper calves! However, I still believe a good mix of exercises is best, but it was a MISTAKE on my part to ignore this lift totally. It is back in my ‘regular’ rotation!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderWow! Good news on the surgery. I understand his reaction of “Well see” when I was bugging him about coming to Nationals in Kirksville.
I have not got to meet Frank in person, I hope to have that privilege one day soon!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderMy understanding of the USAWA situation with the powerlifts and olympic lifts was that Bill Clark was of the opinion that there were already organizations that had those lifts covered. I would ask for Al to clarify here but it is also my understanding that all you need to do to approve new lifts for the USAWA would be to bring it to the Nationals when we also have our national meeting. There, a vote could be held and the lifts (or any lift demonstrated and rules submitted) could be approved. Another good reason to come to nationals!!!!!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderTully….I thought you compete in the USAWA to enjoy the friendly banter between the Dino Gym (AKA Evil Empire)and the perennial underdogs…the JEDI Knights of lifting….the JWC. I kinda picture you as Darth Vader and me…well…I’m Yoda. hahaha

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderAl, I got a couple of trophies like that. I went to an ADFPA meet in Iowa. I entered the Open, the Bench, and Deadlift and came home with three of the most obnoxiously huge trophies you’ve ever seen. I was honestly embarrassed because only in the Deadlift had I actually beaten anyone!!!! I got rid of the other two and kept the Deadlift one as it was the only one that had any meaning.
