Dear Dino Man,
You really should have more articles by Thom Van Vleck. He is by far the best on your website, you should pay him to get him to write more…money…lots and lots of money. I’m not sure I can choke down one more story by that Al Myers…he sucks.

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderWow, Al, I used to do substance abuse counseling and that was some world class justification. De-Nial isn’t just a river in Egypt! I’m glad you have finally given credit where credit is due and all your big lifts and throws were the singular result of your chewing.
But seriously…..Mt. Dew is chock full of goodness. Including lots of essential sugars. Caffiene is practically a vitamin. Plus, I need it to wash down my anti-inflammatories…….hahahahaha

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderAl, I”m just kidding. I was trying to get the jump on you and make fun of myself before I gave you the satisfaction. Besides, I’m dropping to 275 so I can hit 125kg records, then next meet go 125+, to double my records!!!! haha
But seriously, I hope nobody takes it wrong, I’m not trying to demean the importance of the records, some of those were for my charity record breaker and some were at my record day when we were having fun!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderI agree in the longer bar stuff….I used a bar that John Ware had special made that had about 6″ more room between the sleeves. It’s the bar he used to squat 1000 with. I went collar to collar with my grip and set the bar as low on my back as I could get away with….then the switch screwed me up at a ADFPA meet. I’d hit 560 the week before and BOMBED with 475!!! Talk about feeling like an idiot. It just wasn’t comfortable. You get well and get back at it.

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderTully, sorry to hear about your meet. I like squatting with my safety squat bar because I can’t cheat by leaning forward (When I did my 600lb squat I leaned forward until my knees hit my chest and then “dipped” my hips and did a good morning with it. I quit squatting heavy for that reason, my back was so much stronger than my legs I was gonna get hurt!
My question is: Do you feel like you should have done some more straight bar squats leading up to the meet?

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-Rounder…..say….can you send me that list…I’m gonna sanction a record day at my gym for this weekend! haha
There’s only one problem with your “dig” on me, Al……not all those were “token” lifts…..

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderWell, I know it’s not the same, but I have a safety squat bar and if you use it without holding onto the rack, it’s similiar, but not the same. I also have a bar that is very badly bent (thanks to Sean Betz) that I squat with, its kind alike the “buffalo bar”. I agree with the switching things up. My opinion is there is no physiological advantage, it’s all mental. But don’t underestimate the importance of keeping things fresh mentally!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderOk, I’ll fess up. I made up the story on Chad….he’s right, he does enough dumb stuff….at least according to Al.
When I was in the Marines, guys weren’t allowed to smoke in uniform, but they could chew so almost everyone did. We were sitting around after work one day drinking a few brews and several guys were filling up an empty bottle with spit. One guy grabbed the bottle and took a swig and swallowed it. We all became aware in the same instant what had happened. Being Marines, we all laughed at him as he ran into the bathroom blowing chunks…..ah, yes, the good ol’ days. It was funny when he came back in and chugged a beer trying to get the taste out of his mouth.

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderWell, at least we don’t have to deal with second hand chew…..unless you count the time Chad accidently took a sip of your spit cup.
