Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderHAHAHAH….This was not recent…like most of my memories….LONG AGO! But it hangs proudly in my gym! His name was Ryan Snelling. He won a bunch of single lift deadlift nationals and worlds in one of the many organizations. He consistently pulled a quad bodyweight deadlift for several years. Interestingly enough, he came out and tried WOB and did HORRIBLE at it. His deads were slow and methodical, even his warm ups. So you get what you train for!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderHAHAHAH….. It’s been a long time since I was in the service but I remember fondly all the name calling and fun. I don’t take it too personally. I just wondered what happened to my ol’ Buddy!
Just don’t drop kick me….I don’t want a guy your age to have to climb up a step ladder to do it!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-Rounder1. I am a Marine, not a “soldier”. There’s a difference.
2. In my boot camp there was all kinds of name calling and here were a few I was called in boot camp AND AFTER. IT WAS A TERM of endearment. I was taught “Sir” was reserved for officers and if you called any enlisted Marine “Sir” that would jump your ass and say “I work for a living”.
a. Van F@ck (and just about any other cuss word with a “van” in front of it).
b. Fat Unsat (short for unsatifactory) PIG.
c. Hillbilly (my middle name is Earl…and truth be told I come from a long line of hillbilies).
d. Rectum Face (probably something to do with my smart ass comments and talking crap.
e. ….and a bunch of others that I can’t.
If you were offended by being called “Wags” it was NOT intended to offend but meant as a term of endearment. If you were offended by it I won’t call that again but JESUS CHRIST if you were offended I will remind you of “Francis” on Stripes…don’t be that guy.
3. We were taught in the Marines to never leave anyone behind. I seriously got a little concerned. Next time I won’t be as a courtesy.
4. As for the drop kick. I’ll be honest, I really think that you could beat the living crap out of me even though I’m twice your size. You are completely right about the push ups….well…maybe I could do 5… but still, you’d clobber me. But in the Marines we were taught to shoot and if do that right you never have to worry about getting drop kicked. I won’t mention my shooting skills, you are already aware of them.
5. Finally….I sure as he!! hope you are just ribbing me. But I will say this, if you don choose to kick my ass the next time we meet do your worst because I’ll never address you as “Sir” because I was trained that “Sir” was reserved for those that don’t work for a living and I indeed know you have worked harder than most.
6. Let’s have a beer soon! I’ll be at Al’s in a couple weeks and I’ll buy you one!Thom Van Vleck

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderDon’t get me wrong. Better to hanging around the gym all day than in a bar or worse. I just remember doing reps because my workout routine said to do them. Now I think about the quality of each rep. ….oh…and kids does that to a guy…NO TIME TO MESS AROUND!!!

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderPlease tell my that’s a joke about navigating with Al. I once had a bunch of maps I’d printed out with Al and Chad on a trip. Chad says to Al, “Al, I like how Thom has all these maps, we know where we are going”. Al looked at Chad like he was crazy and said, “Chad, where’s the adventure in that”! HAHAHAHAHA

Highland Games athlete and sometimes All-RounderI was in Scotland, but I personally did not have an problem (just got a new roof!!!) …however we got between 9 and 10.5 inches officially between the airport (south of town) and the TV station (north of town). It flooded a part of hiway 63 that had NEVER been flooded and you can tell it did a number on my gravel road! It blew down a huge brick wall down town and the roof off a hardware store….epic!
