Here’s my big one from this year:
FYI for those in the Kansas City area:
One just popped up listed for sale
The crew of powerlifters I used to run with had one. Not sure who ended up with it when we disbanded. It was huge, weighed around 75#. It definitely worked your core and kind of had a swing to it when you came out of the hole. I also have a bent bar similar to a buffalo that I bent the hell out of, but I don’t really use it anymore since I bent it so much.
When I was in High School on a trip to the National FFA Convention, we were all chewing tobacco and passing a spit cup around. One guy who had just tried chew for the first time smelt the cup and being already nauseous from the chew, ended up having to hang his head out the bus window for most of the trip back home.
A few months later in the spring, some of us got the Agriculture Teacher to get one of the school’s small buses and take us in an unofficial FFA trip down to the Farm Show going on in St. Louis. Well, one fellow and I went to a couple of the tobacco booths for free samples and they gave us a ridiculous amount of chew. We even asked if they had any pouches and they gave us a box of three full sized pouches. We passed it all out amongst our group. Well when we got back to the school, we went to the kid’s locker who was previously sick from the smell of chew and proceeded to just fill his locker full of chew sprinkling it on everything (we didn’t have locks on our lockers as we didn’t steal from each other). Being a warm spring weekend and a school without the modern convenience of air-conditioning, his locker was pretty ripe smelling by monday morning. We all sat around and waited for him to show up to school and when he opened his locker, he lost his breakfast all over the hallway. Some of those lifts this weekend look like they’d humble many.
I think the Goerner stroll looks nasty. I mean when you think of a farmer’s walk, you’re thinking a few hundred per hand but using a bar will drastically reduce what people will be able to do. The wrist control involved will be huge as well. I think even 135 per hand would be a huge number.
Same with the snatch with the plank. Not that I’ve ever snatched but I imagine the gripping element will keep the weights down.
And the Dinnie lift of course brings a different element with the use of rings, that will definitely bring some pain to the hands. I originally was naive in my thinking of the lift and thinking 734 wasn’t much for what amounted to like a 20″ DL, but then the rings, the twisting and torque involved … It’s an odd lift.
Honestly, when I came home from Scotland after lifting the Dinnie Stones, I became bored with standard lifts and even with iron weight. No amount of deadlifting is going to make you good at the Goerner stroll this weekend. And I’d even say no amount of snatching will make you excel at the Saxon Snatch. For one to excel at one of these comps truly requires all-round strength. It just seems cool to me and not nearly as boring as powerlifting. Whereas I may do well in powerlifting, these comps would kick my butt, but they look more fun.
Wish I could come. I still hold out hope that my wife wont have to go into work leaving me free of baby duty to rush out there and play.
I’m all for the poor version. I like your towel idea. I’ve tried it without the towel and can only stand so much. I’m giving that a try, thanks.
Thom – what kind of sauna do you have? I want a sauna for my house and always see those new infrared saunas and am leery of those as I’ve only used the old fashioned ones. Any opinions? I also think saunas are great for the health and especially when I’m feeling ill, I’ll go sit in the sauna at the gym.
Arrggghhhh – I’m still bummed that I can’t make it. I’d have gotten killed on most lifts but just the fact that it is such a unique competition makes it interesting as hell. And a cool auction as well, I’m sure it’ll be an awesome time.
He has certainly fought hard and long for that lift and his continued journey towards it is to be commended.
Different goal, not his 40 record goal. This attempt he kept kind of secret.
Dave,
I went to a Scotch tasting last week and one of the last ones we tried was called Ledaig. I liked it quite a bit and bought a bottle of it.Now, for that day, sounds interesting and a possibility. There’s a chance I’m having my hand worked on so I’ll have to see.
I grew up wearing our nice clothes to church on sunday. I didn’t actually have a suit growing up and always felt under-dressed in slacks and a dress shirt and wished my family had enough money to buy me a suit. I mean there is a term called your “sunday best.” But now, I’ll drive past a church on sunday and see kids in shorts and a tee-shirt and think it’s gone too far.
I’m a lawyer and I can’t believe what some people where to court these days, there are actual court rules stating I must wear a coat and tie but some judges are pretty relaxed on attire of others, though I will say I have seen some people kicked out of court for their dress.
Yhe best was in Platte county when a judge looked at a fellow in a KU shirt and told him to come to court dressed proper next time and upon looking confused, the judge said “this is Tiger country boy, don’t wear that Jayhawk crap in here” and then just laughed at him.
I do like the image of judges dressed in a way to set them apart from the crowd, whether that be jeans and matching tee-shirt or a suit. I watched some of the powerlifting out at the Arnold this year and those judges were in suits if I recall correctly and David Webster was dressed in his finest Scottish attire as judge of the strongman.
Congratulations Chad
