Congrats Dave! Enjoyed your article quite a bit.

Thanks a lot guys! I’ve really learned over the past few months that a back injury changes things in an instant. I won’t let my overzealousness hurt my chances of being able to lift again.

Touching write-up Thom! Please let me know where I can send a check for his benefit and I’ll get that out to you ASAP.

More great articles on the site! Well done to all the winners.

Al, I enjoyed your extreme wrist roller article! Well done and I’ve seen a handful of those setups over the years and it definitely made more sense to me to do it mounted on a rack instead of letting the shoulders dictate when the exercise was done.

Congrats to Scott! That’s an excellent article and I’m jealous of his crazy pinch strength since that’s my biggest grip weakness.

Great tips guys! I didn’t understand that about the snatch grip on the pullover part. I would’ve been able to pullover a lot more than I did at the 2009 USAWA Nationals. Just wouldn’t have been able to press it probably.

Haha! Well played Jarrod!

Is there an address where I can send fresh baked cookies to the judge?

Very nice pull on the 300! I like that you kept at it and eventually pulled it.

Great lift Ben!! That is quite a bit different than USAWA rules! What were those little colored bottles in front of the weight for? In grip comps, how high do you have to lift the VB, or just off the floor adequate?Word of advice – you better stretch those hammies first before doing another lift that big!!!! Al
Thanks Al!
The colored bottles are just paint bottles that I use to gauge height in videos. The standard grip comp rules only require 2″ of height to be declared a legal lift.
I’ve never had a hammy cramp up on a lift like the vbar. Even when I pulled 400lbs+ a few times on the 1″ vbar. I was pretty surprised. It continued to cramp all through the night.

TGUs are pretty cool. When my right shoulder was still very stable (2007 – before a lot of steel bending) I did 115 pounds with an Olympic bar. And I watched a Crossfit guy at a health club here in town do 135 pounds. He probably weighed 185 pounds.

Ben – that sounds like a great topic, just don’t forget to send it in this time! BTW – a picture is required. All good News Stories need to have a picture to illustrate the message! AlWill do! I will take a few pictures to show the relevant points in detail.

Technique work with Snatches followed by some Middle Finger Deadlifts. Big pr tonight. Tried 315 twice and it told me to go take a hike. Dropped down to 300 and missed twice. Got mad. Ain’t going to let a weight talk to me like that so I nailed it the third try-YEEHAW! Skin is for wimps!!Great work on the 300! Did you move 315 either try?

That’s definitely a good point. I have a 2″ vertical bar demo video that has helped some guys increase their numbers for the standard grip contests. The rules are different than the USAWA contests – but the grip options presented are just as applicable to increasing your 2″ vertical bar numbers for USAWA comps as they are the other way around.
The video is short and sweet. Goes over the grip that I think is most efficient for the USAWA contests. Not something that I came up with myself of course, but it’s informational. The other grips covered are good options for grip contests. One of those is good for guys that are either worried about a bicep injury, or guys that have previously sustained a bicep injury. Actually the USAWA grip is pretty good for that reason too – it minimizes strain on the bicep compared to the extreme supinated grip that I used almost exclusively to develop some remarkable vertical bar strength over the years.
Here’s that demo video for those that are interested:
