I voted NO on the knee sleeves poll. I personally don’t think weightlifting belts should be allowed in USAWA comps. Just to keep the org truly “raw.”

Admittedly, I’m not what anyone here in this conversation would consider a “lifter.” So I don’t have personal experience with supportive and/or protective gear – with the exception of a lifting belt that I wear ocof

Ben, I was actually surprised that I had finally gotten that 255, as it took me 3-4 near misses until I finally got an acceptable pull in for the judges. It would be AWESOME to see a 270+ pull!

Troy, you have my full respect and attention man! Seriously, that is one hell of a lift and it’s even more impressive because I get the impression (from your muscular build) that you’re probably a strongman competitor but don’t do any specific grip work besides some farmer’s walk and probably thickbar training too.

It was very impressive Ben. They all came off the ground very easily. I should have doubled checked that record for you, I had the dang list!

Thanks Chad! And not your fault at all. I didn’t check it since I thought I remembered it right. If I remember right it took me a few attempts to get 254.5lbs for a legal lift anyway. I haven’t been training 2″ vertical bar for the last few months anyway and I was down a full weight class so I thought I’d be lucky to get in the high 220lb range with both hands.

              Actually Troy did 255lbs Ben.

              Jesse

I know Jesse, I messed up the “memory” part of it. I’m normally like the Rain Man when it comes to grip numbers and performances.

Dave, thanks for having us all out to your gym yesterday! As usual, I had a blast and enjoyed watching everyone do their thing. Some of the lifts you don’t see performed very often so that’s always entertaining.

I enjoyed the camaraderie all around. Great group of people – including the spectators.

I’ll write something up when I get a chance but today is 16 hours at work and probably tomorrow too. So it’ll be a bit.

Ben, To be honest I haven’t even began to think about the Grip Champs yet! It will be around the same time (middle February) as the years before. I am hoping that I can organize our Grip Champs on the same day that Mark Haydock hosts the IAWA(UK) Grip Champs and have a World comp as well. I have talked to Mark about us doing a “live feed” competition whereas we would be all competing at the same time and we could watch each other lift via the internet. Maybe even turn it into a USAWA vs. IAWA(UK) meet? Al

That sounds really cool Al! I like the idea of a “live feed” USAWA vs. IAWA contest too. That will be exciting.

Jesse, I look forward to seeing that at the Dino Gym Record Day! That is a monstrous lift on the Bent Row. I’ve been out of USAWA comps too long. Should be able to make the Ledaig Record Day in July and the Dino Gym Record Day in August. I’ve pulled a lot of strings at work to be able to do it so I hope it all works out. Miss competing and seeing you guys.

Great write-up and congrats to all the lifters! Some great numbers were put up all around. I’m most impressed with Scott’s 394lb two 2″ vbar deadlift. Sorry I couldn’t make it guys.

Al, also my apologies for not getting back to you on that e-mail. I thought it went through but it turns out I just found it in my Draft folder about 10 minutes ago and was appalled since it looked like I ignored you.

Been dealing with the death of my father a week ago, and before that the quick decline. So I wasn’t up for traveling anywhere but I am at least back to work now for what that’s worth.

Oh yeah, also saw that my check hadn’t been cashed for my USAWA membership. Does that mean my 2nd attempt at USAWA membership renewal didn’t make it through? Dang, someone in the PO (kidding) is trying to keep me from renewing! I’ll send another check out even though I’m not sure if I’ll be competing again. I hope I will. But things are different now in many ways.

Ah, 1-handed makes sense then Jesse! Didn’t understand that but now I do. It took me a long time to get to the point where two 35s was an everyday thing 1-handed. You might surprise yourself and get there much quicker than I did.

Most guys use 35s or 45s as the base pair of plates. Seems like the higher quality the plates – the thinner they are in my experience. Not by a lot, but the cheapie 45s I bought a long time ago are super thick. About 3″ together and very sharp edges. Totally not ideal for pinching.

I should also point out that Al helped me out at Clark’s Gym Record Day back in late 2009 and showed me how to do the double vertical bar deadlift. He has pulled 400 pounds so I probably already saw the technique that would yield that for me if my back was strong enough to handle the close together feet style of pulling. If I could pull the vertical bars Dinnie style (Jefferson deadlift) I’d be in the mid-400s I think.

Ha! Guess I’ll be sending mine in again. Got an empty, shredded envelope with no check in it – the one I had sent out last week with my membership renewal. Thanks PO!
