New records director, records update, and Century Club update!

By Tony Lupo

I am honored to be the new Record Keeper for the USAWA. This is a big job and I hope to live up to the trust put in me by the executive board. I would like to thank my predecessors, John Strangeway and Abe Smith. They did a great job keeping the list intact. It is a huge job.

I also want to thank Sanjiv Gupta for his help as well. Since the Nationals, Sanjiv, Abe, and I have acted as a team in all things. The records are now up-to-date through the Second Quarter Postals (6/30/2024). If you spot any errors in your records, let me know! I can be reached at lupoa0313@gmail.com.

We should have some rapid updates coming out in the next week as we work through July, then August, and September. After we get caught up, then we’ll tackle the TEAM LIFT file.

Welcome and congratulations to newcomers Stacy Todd and Allison Lupo to the Century Club on the Women’s side! On the men’s side, welcome and congratulations to Clint Poore, John Carter, and Joshua Monk! Thank you all!

Century Club

By Eric Todd

With the most recent update to the record list by our new records director, John Strangeway, I thought it would be a good opportunity to update our century club.  There was no movement whatsoever in the women’s list.  Though the number of records changed somewhat in the men’s list, the top 12 stayed in the exact same order as they were in the last update in January of 2020.  I was able to jump from number 15 to number 13 by adding 20 records.  The biggest leap was John Strangeway going from 22nd to 16th by adding 36 records to the list.  Aiden Habecker jumped a few spots from 28th to a three way tie at 24.  Aiden added 13 to his total.  Jeff Ciavattone made the jump from 27th to the three way tie at 24th by adding 12 records to his total. (Aiden and Jeff share 24th place on our list with Bob Geib).  One thing of note is that big Frank made it to three centuries for this update.  The biggest news is that we have a new member of the century club with this update.  Abe Smith, of Clark’s Gym in Missouri, has achieved century club status after a couple of decades of record setting.  Abe comes in with 108 record. If you think you should be listed as a member of the Century Club, or if you think you are getting close and would like for me to keep an eye on when you might be joining us, please reach out to me.  My email address is SalGuimino@yahoo.com.

Updated Century Club

By Al Myers

An updated CENTURY CLUB list has been put up on the website, and with this update comes some BIG NEWS!  We now have two new members in the century club – Johnny Strangeway and Aidan Habecker.

Johnny has to be the fastest person ever to make the Century Club.  He has achieved this in only a few short years.  Usually it takes a lifter over 10 years to earn this achievement.  But for those that have lifted against Scottish Johnny should not be surprised as he seems to have the ability to set a new USAWA record in every lift he tries.

Aidan is the FIRST teenager to ever make the Century Club.  This is very notable as we have had many great teenage lifters compete in the USAWA throughout the years.  I know he has worked hard to achieve this and something he should be very proud of.

I was glad to see my buddy Dave Glasgow get back in the Century Club.  Dave’s been in before but dropped off the list a while back.   My advice to Dave is not to “sit back” and relax now that you are back in the Century Club.  If some of your records get broken you need to keep setting new ones to stay in!

The biggest mover in the Century Club is our Prez Denny Habecker.  Denny is up 20 since last count and continues to expand his big lead in number of records, which now stands at a staggering 642.  A couple of lifters have made moves up on the list.  Chad Ullom moved up to the number six spot and Eric Todd made a big jump from number 18 to number 15.  The womens Century Club is still being led by RJ Jackson at 299 records.

NEW CENTURY CLUB MEMBER

By Al Myers

An updated record list is now available on the website.  It’s been a few months with several comps so there has been alot of additions. I want to thank Scottish Johnny for his help in getting this list updated.  He’s been my assistant lately with the record list and his help has been much appreciated.

The BIG NEWS this time is the addition of a new CENTURY CLUB member.   Longtime USAWA member Jeff Ciavattone made the list – with a now standing 103 USAWA Records.  Big congrats to Jeff on this.  Jeff has records going back to his teenage years in the USAWA so this is an accomplishment he has worked long and hard at.

The Womens Century Club has been unchanged, with RJ still at the top with 292 records.  Denny Habecker continues to build his lead in the Mens Century Club with 622 USAWA Records. The biggest record mover this time around is LaVerne Myers, who added 18 records to his listing. LaVerne now stands in 10th place overall, passing Bob Hirsh.

I really hate to see people fall out of the Century Club.  But that will happen if some of your records get broken and you haven’t been setting new ones to offset it.  This time Dave Glasgow slipped out of the club listing and is setting at 98 records.  I will have to encourage Dave to get back after it and set some new records so he can get back in the century club!!

Now who’s going to be next in the Century Club?  I predicted Jeff was going to make it several months ago, so I’m pretty confident in my ability to make this prediction.   So here it goes – I predict Aidan Habecker will be the first teenager to make it.   I also am going to put my money on Scottish Johnny.  He has been tearing up the records this past year and is moving up his count faster than most realize.  I predict both will be the Century Club by the end of the year. So guys – don’t let me down!!

Updated Record List

By Al Myers

I just put up an updated Record List on the website. With the new record list, I also updated the CENTURY CLUB. Not alot of changes in the CENTURY CLUB.  The Club still stands at 4 women and 25 men – the same as before.

The Womens Century Club doesn’t leave much new to report. RJ still leads the way with 296 USAWA records.

The Mens Century Club is still lead by our Prez, Denny Habecker, with 591 USAWA Records! Denny will hit the 600 mark by next count!!!  There were a couple of changes in the rankings with Dean Ross moving up to 4th, passing John McKean. Since the last count, Dean has set an additional 42 records! That’s the most of anyone in the USAWA.  Chad Ullom moved up from 9th to a tie at 8th with the LEGEND Frank Ciavattone at 286 records. Chad was the 2nd biggest “increaser” with 26 new records. LaVerne Myers moved up from 13th to 12th, passing Scott Schmidt. Both of these two have been increasing their records pretty steady over the past few years, and have stayed within “striking distance” of each other. Bill Clark lost the most records, down 19 but still holds the 11th spot.  However, I bet it won’t be long and LaVerne and Scott will ecclipse him if Bill doesn’t get back on the platform in the USAWA.  Eric Todd made the biggest jump in ranking, going from 22nd to 20th with the addition of 11 new USAWA records.

Now for my prediction of who will be the NEXT member of the CENTURY CLUB –

……  I’m going to go with Jeff Ciavattone.  Jeff has been lifting off and on in the USAWA for over 20 years and is getting close.  He currently holds 90 records, so all its gonna take is a couple more meets for him to make it.

Longshots to get in soon – Dan Wagman and Abe Smith.  Both of these guys are over 90 records now, but it all depends of when and how often they plan to compete in the future.  I hope by me calling them “longshots” that will serve as a little motivation!
