Old Time Strongman Championship-Results

By Eric Todd

This Saturday past saw the 13th annual Old Time Strongman Championship. There was no championship held in 2020, due to the pandemic. It was on track to being the best attended OTSM championships, but due to illness, work obligations and other matters, we fell short of tying the top set in 2017 and 2023 by one competitor.

The day was a beautiful one in God’s country. the conditions of the ole tin can were tolerable. The weights were heavy, and the competitors were ferocious. I do not know when I have seen a more determined group. Many a time, I saw lifts that felt like they were going to fail, but the will of the competitor would not be denied. That is the stuff that keeps me hanging around.

Women’s class winner-Lilly Todd

We started off with the Saxon Snatch. The men’s division was dominated by Chad Ullom and Chris Todd. They both were successful with 90 pounds. That is not too far off the all time mark of 110 set by Scott Tully in 2016. The fight of the day was Everett Todd’s 30 pounds. He was denied several times for a lockout before finally making a clean lift. In the women’s division, the top lift was a 60 pound effort by Stacy Todd.

We then moved to the Habecker Lift, named after the honorable president Denny Habecker, who was MIA due to an illness. This lift almost crippled me once. Chad Ullom again had the top mark in the men’s division with 405 pounds. The women’s class saw the youngster Lilly Todd outdistance her ma 215# to 190#.

Men’s Division’s most decorates Old Time Strongman-Chad Ullom

The third lift was the Apollon’s Lift. a clean and press with a two-inch bar. The slight slant of the platform and the slope of the roof (believe me, there is a learning curve on that one) saw some people struggle with this one. Chris Todd easily set the top mark in the men’s class with a 175 pound effort. The lift of the day, though was from his daughter Lillian. The 2-inch bar gave her fits in the clean. In her last attempt, it appeared there was no way she would get the lift after multiple failures to clean it. With time winding down, she executed the clean, and finished off the press for the best effort in the women’s division of 90 pounds.

The last lift of the day was the Kennedy Lift. This is the lift in which we expected the highest poundage’s. Chad outdistanced the men’s field by almost 300 pounds, hitting a 705 pound effort. Stacy Todd bested the women’s division by 125 pounds. There were some stupid efforts in this lift. It was clear everone was going for broke to finish the meet.

The results from the Second Annual Old Time Strongman Championships have been tabulated.  I was so excited to see the international involvement again this year, as that makes this competition a truly World event.  This year a total of 26 lifters competed (exceeding that of last year).  Australia had 6 lifters, the United States had 8 lifters, England had 10 lifters, Wales had 1 lifter, and Canada had 1 lifter. Three different OTSM lifts were chosen this year to add a new challenge for everyone. The OVERALL BEST LIFTERS were Women – Sylvia Stockall of Canada and Men – Greg Cook of the USA.  Congratulations to both of these lifters for their exceptional lifting.  As I was putting all the results together I noticed great lifting from so many other lifters as well. I want to really thank everyone for supporting this World Championships!!!  I especially want to thank the promoters from each country for hosting the venue for the lifters.

Here are a few words from Phil Crisp:

the 2019 English Old Time Strongman Championships, the national leg for England of the World Old Time Strongman Championships, was held on 21st July in Hailsham, England. Promoted by Nick Swain and Phil Crisp, Nick very unfortunately could not make the competition due to pressing personal reasons on the day. However, his and Phil’s previous work had paid off and the competition was well set up and ready to go, with Rory Hoad, who was already pencilled in for the day as a helper, stepping up to referee and help organise the day efficiently and without missing a trick..

Whilst the usual remarks on the camaraderie, the support, the great help from Freedom Leisure where the competition was held, and the lovely weather (with the first lift taking place outside!) could all be given as highlights of the competition perhaps the most impressive part of the day was the quality of the lifting.

Leading the charge here was Rory Hoad, who took the Open and Overall titles of the English Old Time Strongman Championships. Rory pulled a huge 360kg Kennedy lift to underscore his fantastic day. Phil Crisp, last year’s champion and also the 2018 World Old Time Strongman champion was pushed into 2nd place, although Phil took the Masters category. In third overall, Paul Barette – with his usual pulling powers on show once more (!) – saw off Danny Kingsland’s very close push for the podium by a margin of 10 points. Rouhol Uddin, in a very balanced performance, took fifth followed by the excellent Steve Shah and the very promising Junior champion Brandon Hazell-Hyland.

With a few lifters having to pull out at the last minute, the field of seven could easily have been extended. The event and the idea of the Old Time World Strongman Championship, however, seems to be growing in strength under Al Myers and John Mahon and we look forward to next year’s edition!

Old Time Strongman Championship

Group picture from the 2018 OTSM Championships

By Eric Todd

Since it’s inception back in 2011, the Old Time strongman championship has been a mainstay in the USAWA.  It is often one of the better attended championships in our organization.  The turnout was good again, and the lifting phenominal.  There have been 6 lifters who have won this meet in the men’s division, and 3 of them going at it this day.  When the dust settled, there was still only 6 men who have won this saught after title. We had lifters from 4 states.  Missouri was represented the Lance Foster, John Strangeway, Greg Cook and Chris Todd of KCSTRONGMAN.  Kansas was Chad Ullum and Scott and Heather Tully of the Dino Gym, and John Douglas of Ledaig Heavy Athletics. Oklahoma was Dean Ross of Dino Gym.  And Pennsylvania was your President, Denny Habecker of Habecker’s Gym.

The first lift contested was the Saxon Snatch.  As this is a lift that can leave you quickly with just a few more additional pounds, it was a rather tightly contested race.  We had three lifters tie for top honors at 100 pounds (Scott Tulley, “Scottish” Johnny Strangeway, and Chad Ullum, with Chris Todd and Greg Cook slightly back at 95).  Scott was close on his third attempt at 115, which would have bested his all-time record in this dicipline.  What impressed me the most was Scottish Johnny’s beautiful split style and Chad’s painful looking modified style, due to flexibility issues.  That, and Heather Tully keeping pace with the boys with a 70 pound effort.

After the Saxon Snatch, we moved to the Cyr Press.  Johnny had the top mark on this lift with 125 pounds, with a good record attempt at 135.  Otherwise, I was most impressed with the ease Chris Todd lifted the 115 pound dumbell, when I had to convince him to go there instead of 110.  He was easily good for more.

The third lift would be the Dinnie Lift.  This is where we witnessed the most impressive lift of the meet.  There have been a number of 700 pound lifts in the Dinnies since the Old Time strongman part of USAWA was concieved.  However, there had only been 1 lifter go over 800 pound.  It was grip phenom Adam Glass, with a lift of 822.  That was a bit of an outlier, though, as my 770 effort was the closest.  No lifter had previously been in the neighborhood of Glass.  That all changed today.  I knew something big was going to happen when former champ Chad Ullum was still warming up at 700 pounds.  And big it was when Chad called for, and successfully lifted 825 on his second attempt.  This would go a long way in the overall tally.

After feasting on sandwiches and Little Debbie snack cakes, we began the fourth and final lift, the Dumbbell to shoulder.  From experience, I know that if done correctly, your top lift will be a painful, lengthy effort.  These guys did not disappoint.  While the top lifts in this discipline were 240 pounds by Chad and John Douglas, my favorite effort was Denny’s 90.  On his second attempt, after a long, arduous effort that almost resulted in success, but ultimately failure, Denny almost packed it in.  However, after a minute to collect himself, he called for 90 on a third.  This time, Denny was determined and made it in short fashion.

In the end, Heather Tully was our Women’s Champion.  This increases her reign as Queen of the OTSM to 3 championships in a row.  Chad Ullum reclaimed the crown he first won in 2012 in Kirksville, MO.  His HUGE Dinnie lift was too much to overcome.  2nd place was John Strangeway.  Last year’s champion, Greg Cook took 3rd place honors.  Final results are as follows:
